Early users of Apple’s latest 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips report a key design shift in the included 140W power adapter, rendering some accessories incompatible.

Redesigned Duckhead Connector

The adapter’s removable AC wall plug, known as the duckhead, features a new symmetrical shape. Traditional Apple adapters rely on a C7 connector resembling eyeglasses, but this update deviates from that standard.

Affected Accessories

Several products no longer connect properly. Apple’s $19 Power Adapter Extension Cable fails to attach, as its design matches older duckhead plugs. Apple phased out including these cables a decade ago with the debut of Touch Bar MacBook Pros.

The Apple World Travel Adapter Kit also proves incompatible. Though discontinued from Apple’s online store, official support documentation details its specifications.

Standalone Adapter Status

Questions linger about the $99 standalone 140W USB-C Power Adapter. Current listings confirm compatibility with the Power Adapter Extension Cable, suggesting it may retain the prior design.
