A 78-year-old DoorDash delivery driver captured hearts worldwide after doorbell camera footage showed him struggling up a driveway in Manchester, Tennessee, on March 10. Richard Pulley, who delivered Starbucks orders to Brittany Smith’s home, now stands on the brink of millionaire status thanks to over 30,000 donations totaling more than $900,000.
The Viral Delivery and GoFundMe Surge
Brittany Smith shared the touching video online, prompting her to connect with Pulley via social media. She learned that financial hardships forced him back to work after his wife, Brenda, lost her job. The couple struggled to cover expenses and medications, leaving retirement out of reach.
Moved by their plight, Smith launched a GoFundMe campaign titled ‘Let’s help Richard go back into retirement!’ with an initial $20,000 goal. Donations poured in rapidly, surpassing expectations and prompting organizers to raise the target to $1.1 million.
Heartfelt Messages from Donors
Supporters left encouraging notes alongside their contributions. One donor wrote, “Richard, I hope you and your wife enjoy your retirement and get to put your feet up. I also hope this fundraiser will allow you to spend time doing activities you both enjoy!”
Another added, “Sending you and your wife strength and comfort. Wishing you peaceful days ahead and the chance to rest again.” A third shared, “I hope you and your wife get the retirement you deserve. My grandparents are my best friends, and they are about the same age, so when I saw this, my heart broke for you. I pray you’re able to live comfortably forever!”
Couple’s Gratitude and Background
In a recent interview, Richard Pulley expressed deep appreciation: “We appreciate every one of them. It’s taking a lot of pressure off of us and making life livable once again.”
The couple teamed up for deliveries, with Brenda driving and Richard handling drop-offs. “When you’re past your mid-70s, there’s not exactly a line of people waiting to hire you,” Brenda noted. She expressed astonishment at the generosity: “I just can’t believe that someone would be that caring to set this up for us.”
The largest single contribution reached $5,000 from an anonymous donor. Recently, the Pulleys met Smith and her daughter at a restaurant, where she presented them with a check, marking a turning point in their lives.
