Amazon Web Services (AMZN) confirms an outage in its UAE-based ME-CENTRAL-1 region after objects struck a data center, sparking a fire and forcing a power shutdown in one availability zone.
Incident Timeline
The disruption began around 4:30 AM PST on March 1, when objects impacted the mec1-az2 availability zone. Sparks ignited a fire, prompting the fire department to cut power to the facility and its generators to extinguish the blaze.
AWS quickly rerouted traffic from the affected zone to maintain service continuity across the region.
AWS Official Statement
In a service health update, AWS detailed: “At around 4:30 AM PST, one of our Availability Zones (mec1-az2) was impacted by objects that struck the data center, creating sparks and fire. The fire department shut off power to the facility and generators as they worked to put out the fire.”
Impacted Services
Customers faced elevated error rates and connectivity issues with key services, including Amazon EC2 instances, Elastic Block Store volumes, relational databases, and various networking APIs. Recovery efforts continue, with AWS monitoring restoration.
The ME-CENTRAL-1 region, located in the UAE, comprises multiple availability zones designed for high availability and fault tolerance.
