4-Year-Old Dies in Bandar Abbas Explosion Before Key Naval Drill

A devastating explosion tore through an apartment building in Iran’s port city of Bandar Abbas on Saturday, resulting in the death of a four-year-old girl. The blast, which local officials attribute to a gas leak, also injured at least 14 others and caused significant damage to the eight-story structure, shattering windows and scattering debris across the street.

Details of the Incident

Footage from the scene captured rescuers carrying a member of the security forces on a stretcher. The individual, dressed in a green uniform with black boots and a neck brace, appeared to be in visible pain while covering part of his uniform insignia with his left hand. The explosion happened just one day before Iran’s scheduled naval exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments that handles about 20% of the world’s traded oil.

Bandar Abbas, located along this vital waterway, has been the focus of heightened tensions. The U.S. military recently warned Iran against any threats to American warships or commercial vessels navigating the strait.

Official Responses and Denials

A local fire official, speaking to state television, confirmed the cause as a gas leak. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard addressed the incident indirectly, denying reports that one of its navy commanders sustained injuries in the blast.

In a separate event on the same day, another explosion in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, also blamed on a gas leak, claimed the lives of five people, according to state media reports.

Broader Regional Tensions

The incidents unfold amid escalating strains between Iran and the United States. President Donald Trump has threatened potential military action against Iran in response to the deaths of peaceful protesters or the execution of detainees from recent crackdowns on demonstrations.

Adding to the uncertainty, top Iranian security official Ali Larijani posted on X late Saturday, stating that ‘structural arrangements for negotiations are progressing.’ Despite this, no public indications of direct talks with the U.S. have emerged, as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, aged 86, continues to reject such discussions.
