Former Coronation Street actress Beverley Callard, known for her role as Liz McDonald, openly shares her breast cancer journey on social media. The 68-year-old describes it as a significant mental challenge while undergoing treatment in the UK.
Recent Surgery and Treatment Progress
Two weeks ago, Callard underwent surgery to remove lymph nodes as a preventive step. She may soon start radiotherapy to target any remaining cancer cells. In a recent update, she revealed positive news: no need for a second operation. Her consultant confirmed the swelling under her arm, measuring three inches long and one-and-a-half inches wide, is softening into fluid that her body will naturally absorb.
“Today has been a great day,” Callard shared. “I got to the hospital at 9am. Jon came in with me… She says I do not need to have the second operation.”
In about four weeks, she expects results on whether all cancer was removed and if it spread to the lymph nodes. If cancer-free, radiotherapy follows shortly after.
Emotional Toll of Recovery
Despite optimism, Callard battles emotional ups and downs. In a video before heading to a London event for ITV, she admitted feeling vulnerable. “I got ready this morning and I just thought ‘I don’t feel like a woman anymore, I feel unfeminine and I shouldn’t be doing this. It’s two weeks since my operation and everybody said it’s too soon and they’re right,” she confessed.
She pushed through shaky confidence: “I’ve pulled myself together, I’m ready… I hope everybody’s well. I’m thinking of everyone who’s going through this, truly.” Her caption read: “Off to an event in London, and I must say it’s been a bit of a mental battle to get myself out the door. But I’m doing it.”
A week post-surgery, without makeup, she tearfully updated followers: “Full disclosure, it’s a week today since my operation… I’ve not cleaned my teeth, I’ve not combed my hair. I can’t answer my phone because if somebody says a kind word to me, I just cry.”
Personal Life and Diagnosis
Callard, married to Jon McEwan since 2010, first disclosed her diagnosis on Ireland’s Late Late Show with Patrick Kielty. Her candid posts highlight the psychological strain of cancer treatment while maintaining public engagements.
