Chvrches deliver fresh covers of The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” and Robert Palmer’s “Addicted To Love” for the third and final season of the popular series Tell Me Lies. The tracks bookend the season’s premiere and finale, capturing its emotional highs and lows.

Covers Bring Unique Twists to Classics

In their rendition of “Addicted To Love,” the Scottish synth-pop trio replaces the 1985 hit’s energetic synths with a minimalist piano line and trades charismatic vocals for a haunting, introspective delivery.

The cover of “Such Great Heights” remains faithful to the original, opening with a pulsing beat that builds into Lauren Mayberry’s powerful vocals, culminating in an uplifting chorus.

Mayberry Reflects on the Experience

“It was such a treat to get to make music for the season premiere and the season finale of this show,” Mayberry shares. “Bookending the insanity and the heartbreak of the season three arc was an honour, and ‘Such Great Heights’ is basically a perfect song, so we were excited and terrified to cover it in equal measure.”

Mayberry highlights the band’s appeal: “The Postal Service is such a special band and their music means a lot to us. I always liked the balance of joy and melancholy in the Postal Service’s music.” She reached out to frontman Ben Gibbard, who responded positively.

Contributing to the show’s last season felt personal for Mayberry. “I think having a genuine love for the show put me in a good position to know what I would want the payoff of that final scene to feel like, from a fan’s perspective,” she explains. The series’ college scenes set in 2008-2009 resonate with her university days, when discussions around toxic relationships were scarce.

Band History and Collaborations

Chvrches share a history with Gibbard, who also fronts Death Cab for Cutie. In 2016, the bands toured together, with Chvrches promoting Every Open Eye and Death Cab supporting Kintsugi. Mayberry joined Gibbard onstage in South Carolina for “Brothers on a Hotel Bed” from Plans.

New Music on the Horizon

The group, last active with live shows through 2023 and supporting Coldplay in Milan, prepares a new album since 2021’s Screen Violence. Members pursued solo ventures: Mayberry released Vicious Creatures in 2024, collaborated with IDLES’ Joe Talbot and The National’s Aaron Dessner, and guested on Lucia & The Best Boys’ “Lonely Girl.” Iain Cook formed Protection with Scott Paterson, while Martin Doherty launched The Leaving with drummer Jonny Scott.

Doherty teases the album: “It’s going to surprise people, and I hope it’s going to delight them and rip some faces off.” At 90% complete, it challenges listeners while retaining the band’s essence.

Show’s Strong Reception

Season three’s premiere drew five million global viewers, a 150% jump from season one’s debut. The finale, “Are You Happy Now, That I’m on My Knees?,” streams on Disney+ in the UK, with prior seasons on BBC iPlayer.
