Physical Keyboards Return in Dedicated Messaging Device
A team of former smartphone industry veterans has unveiled the Communicator – a new Android device featuring a built-in physical keyboard designed for enhanced productivity. Developed by accessory company Clicks, the device marks a significant expansion beyond their previous keyboard attachments for existing smartphones.
Closing the Smartphone Gap
“Smartphones have become really good at a lot of things,” explained Jeff Gadway, Clicks co-founder and former BlackBerry marketing executive. “But when you’re good at everything, you’re not great at anything in particular.” Gadway emphasized that physical keyboards represent an underserved niche in mobile technology.
The Communicator builds upon Clicks’ earlier Power Keyboard attachment, which featured a slide-out design with wireless charging capabilities. “Whether it’s the auditory feedback or the actual feeling of the buttons underneath your thumbs, you can type with more confidence and precision,” Gadway demonstrated during a product showcase.
Designed for Focused Communication
The standalone Communicator phone features ergonomically contoured keys and prioritizes messaging functionality with customized productivity apps. Notably, it includes a unique attention-management system: a programmable LED indicator on the side that lights up when priority contacts or apps require user attention.
“We’ve found there’s a group of people today that really want to be better at communicating, taking action, and avoiding distraction,” Gadway noted, contrasting the device’s purpose against endless content consumption on typical smartphones.
Technical Specifications and Target Market
The Android 16-powered device includes a rear camera and 3.5mm audio jack while maintaining access to Google Play Store. Surprisingly, nearly half of Clicks’ customers represent first-time physical keyboard users according to company data. “Forty-five percent of our customers have never typed on buttons before,” Gadway revealed.
Early reactions suggest appeal beyond nostalgic users. Several technology enthusiasts expressed appreciation for tactile input options, with one noting touchscreen keyboards can be unreliable during critical moments. Another observer mentioned the nostalgic appeal of physical keys combined with modern functionality.
The Communicator is currently available for pre-order at $399 USD, with shipments expected later this year. Positioned as a secondary device for professional communication, it aims to provide an alternative to distraction-heavy mainstream smartphones.
