An air traffic controller who directed a fire truck into the path of an Air Canada plane at LaGuardia Airport, resulting in two deaths, remained on duty for several minutes following the collision.

NTSB Chair Raises Shift Change Concerns

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy stated that the unidentified controller continued working after the incident. “Normally they would be relieved,” Homendy said. “We have questions about that. Was anybody available to relieve that controller? We don’t know that yet.”

Investigators are examining the air traffic control shift change, personnel present in the tower, and availability of replacements at the time of the crash to understand the sequence of events.
