Michael Carrick positions himself as a strong candidate for Manchester United’s next permanent manager following his successful interim spell. The club approaches the decision with caution this time, contrasting the swift appointment in 2019.

Solskjaer’s Rapid Rise to Permanent Role

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer transformed the team immediately upon taking interim charge in December 2018 after Jose Mourinho’s departure. He secured victories in his first six league matches and engineered a stunning comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 tie.

Solskjaer earned the permanent position by late March 2019, shortly after that dramatic win at Parc des Princes. The agreement finalized during a three-hour dinner between the manager and club chief executive Ed Woodward at Cibo, an Italian restaurant in Hale that opened in 2018. The venue offers pasta dishes up to £20 and whole lobster for £67.

Timing and Ceremony

The meeting occurred on the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster. Earlier, Solskjaer joined former United captain Bryan Robson to lay a wreath for the victims. The pair shook hands before club cars transported them from the restaurant.

Days later, United defeated Fulham 3-0 in the league, with Paul Pogba scoring a brace. This result lifted the team into the top four, though they finished sixth after a late collapse.

Subsequent Seasons and Carrick’s Interim Stints

Solskjaer led United to third and second places in his two full seasons. However, the 2021/22 campaign saw struggles, resulting in his dismissal while the team sat seventh, far from Champions League qualification.

Carrick served as interim manager then, handling two league games before Ralf Rangnick assumed control. Carrick now enjoys a longer trial period, with the club likely delaying a permanent hire until summer.

Other Candidates and Upcoming Fixture

Zinedine Zidane featured in prior links, including 2021, and remains available. Recent indications point to a verbal agreement for him to manage France’s national team.

Carrick’s audition continues with Monday night’s away clash against Everton. Victory would restore fourth place and widen the gap over Chelsea and Liverpool.
