At least eight people lost their lives when a passenger coach veered off the road and plunged 50 feet into a ravine in the southern Turkish city of Antalya.
Details of the Incident
The vehicle overturned during the early morning hours, hurling passengers from the coach as it tumbled down the steep slope. The driver appears to have lost control near a multi-level intersection amid heavy fog and slick road surfaces from recent rain.
Rescue teams arrived swiftly at the scene, where the coach had crashed through metal barriers before coming to rest in the wreckage below. Up to 26 individuals sustained injuries, with several in critical condition requiring immediate medical attention.
Official Response and Investigation
Provincial Governor Hulusi Sahin addressed the tragedy, noting the challenging weather conditions. “The ground was wet and there was also fog in the area. It’s not a place to speed, but it seems the bus was speeding,” he stated.
The coach, operated by the Buzlu company, was en route from Tekirdag in northwest Turkey to Antalya after an overnight journey. Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause, with emergency services providing support to victims and their families.
