Former NRL player Rhys Wesser faces stalking charges after allegedly intimidating a woman he dated in Sydney’s Redfern suburb.

Authorities claim the 46-year-old committed the offense between January 23 and 31, targeting a 53-year-old woman known to him. Police charged him with one count of stalking on February 5, alleging he acted with the intention of causing her fear of physical or mental harm.

Court Proceedings

The case appeared before Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on February 18. Magistrate Michael Love excused Wesser from attending the next hearing scheduled for March 4. An interim apprehended violence order remains in place to protect the woman.

Wesser’s NRL Legacy

Nicknamed ‘Rhys Lightning’ for his speed, Wesser scored 129 tries across 219 NRL games from 1998 to 2011. He debuted with the Penrith Panthers, where he notched 113 tries and became a fan favorite for his scoring prowess. In 2002, he set a club record with 19 tries in a season and contributed to the Panthers’ 2003 premiership victory over the Sydney Roosters.

Wesser joined South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2009 but suffered a severe knee injury early in the season. He recovered to play 41 games before retiring in August 2011. He also represented Queensland in four State of Origin matches.
