A 54-year-old driver endured three harrowing days trapped beside a creek in remote western New South Wales after his ute veered off the road and plunged into the water. The incident occurred along Renshaw McGirr Way at Curra Creek, roughly an hour south of Dubbo, when the vehicle flipped down a muddy embankment and landed upside down in the creek on Monday.

The Crash and Initial Struggle

The sole occupant freed himself from the sinking ute but could not retrieve his phone amid the chaos. Severely injured, he found himself stuck on the water’s edge, unable to climb the steep embankment back to the road. The vehicle quickly submerged almost entirely, leaving him exposed to the elements.

Dramatic Discovery and Rescue

A local farmer checking fences in the isolated area stumbled upon the injured man after three cold nights. Paramedics arrived promptly, calling the discovery pure luck. First responders carried him up the embankment before airlifting him to safety.

Medical Update

NSW Ambulance Inspector Sally Lapins stated: “The gentleman was dehydrated and hypothermic, as well as suffering chest and limb injuries. He was fully assessed and made comfortable before being airlifted to hospital in a serious but stable condition.”

The driver was transported by Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter to Royal North Shore Hospital for further treatment.

Ongoing Investigation

Recent rainfall had slickened the road, and witnesses noted worn tires on the ute. NSW Police have launched an investigation into the crash cause. Authorities urge anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
