Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) was hit with a federal indictment Wednesday, accusing her of stealing $5 million in Federal Emergency Administration Company (FEMA) funds to assist her 2021 congressional marketing campaign.

Cherfilus-McCormick, who has been below investigation by the Home Ethics Committee since December 2023, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami and faces as much as 53 years in jail if convicted.

“Utilizing catastrophe reduction funds for self-enrichment is a very egocentric, cynical crime,” Legal professional Common Pam Bondi stated in an announcement. “Nobody is above the regulation, least of all highly effective individuals who rob taxpayers for private acquire.

“We’ll comply with the information on this case and ship justice.”
