Authorities have arrested the principal of an elementary school in northwestern Ontario as part of an online child sexual exploitation probe. Shane Beckett, 53, led Robert Moore School in Fort Frances under the Rainy River District School Board.
Arrest and Charges
Police executed a search warrant at a Fort Frances residence on Tuesday, seizing electronic devices. Beckett faces two counts of luring a person under 16 years of age via telecommunications. He received release from custody and must appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Fort Frances on April 2. The allegations remain unproven in court.
Previously listed as principal on the school board’s site, Beckett’s role now falls to acting principal Allison Hyatt.
School Board Response
The Rainy River District School Board acknowledged the arrest of one of its principals. “We recognize that this news is deeply concerning for our students, families, staff, and the broader community,” the board stated. “At this time, the individual has been removed from their duties, and the board is taking all necessary steps to ensure stability and support within the affected school community.”
“As this matter proceeds through the legal system, the RRDSB will continue to co-operate fully with law enforcement. Because this is an active police investigation, and to respect the privacy and legal rights of those involved, the board will not be providing additional details at this time.”
The board prioritizes student and staff safety, maintaining safe learning environments. Counseling support is available through school offices via the Kenora-Rainy River District Child and Youth Mental Health Program. Clinicians offer emotional support, age-appropriate answers, and help processing related feelings.
Community Impact and Support
Fort Frances, a border town of about 7,500 residents on the Rainy River opposite International Falls, Minnesota, faces community unease. The Kenora-Rainy River District Child and Youth Mental Health Program addressed the situation: “In light of the recent information shared regarding the situation at Robert Moore School, we recognize that many students, families, and staff may be experiencing a wide range of emotions — including concern, confusion, anger, or sadness.”
“Moments like this can feel unsettling, especially when they involve trusted members of our school communities. It’s important to acknowledge these feelings and ensure that both students and caregivers know that support is available.” Parents can contact school clinicians for assistance.
