The fourth of seven female complainants testifies on the fifth day of Canadian businessman Frank Stronach’s sexual assault trial in a Toronto courtroom. Stronach, 93, faces 12 charges, including sexual assault and forcible confinement. Two counts—rape and attempted rape—stem from historical allegations predating the 1983 Criminal Code amendments that introduced the sexual assault offence.

A separate trial awaits Stronach later this year in Newmarket, Ontario, after authorities split the proceedings. The Toronto allegations from the seven women cover 1977 to 1990, including one incident in suburban Scarborough. Three complainants have already shared details of their alleged assaults by the Magna International founder. All seven will testify in this judge-alone trial presided over by Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy.

Fourth Complainant’s Account

A woman now in her 70s describes an alleged attempted rape by Stronach in a midtown Toronto apartment in 1977. She recounts dining with him at his restaurant before accepting an invitation to his apartment. Stronach briefly left the room, then approached from behind, pushing her over the padded arm of a chair in an attempt to rape her. She emphasizes no penetration occurred; she stood up, grabbed her purse and coat, and left immediately.

Cross-Examination Clashes

Stronach’s lawyer, Leora Shemesh, delivers a combative cross-examination, confronting the woman with her prior statements and 2024 police interview. In that interview, the woman had said she did not view herself as a victim. She firmly responds to Shemesh: “I’m a survivor.”

Shemesh also questions the location, noting Stronach’s 1977 association with a downtown Harbourfront unit. The woman insists she is not mistaken about the midtown site.
