Glasgow Warriors staged a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Benetton 31-10 in the United Rugby Championship, securing a bonus-point victory that extends their lead at the top of the table to nine points ahead of the second-placed Stormers.

Half-Time Wake-Up Call

The Warriors trailed 10-7 at the break but exploded for four tries after the interval. Coach Franco Smith delivered a firm half-time message, urging his players to seize the remaining 40 minutes.

“The rocket is for them to realise there’s only 40 minutes left if we don’t start upping our game a little more,” Smith explained. “We always knew that players coming off the bench will come and lift the team and add value.”

Squad Rotation Pays Off

Smith made eight changes from the team that beat Leinster the previous week, reintegrating key players like Johnny Matthews after three months out, Sione Tuipulotu, and Huw Jones. Max Williamson called lineouts for the first time, while Adam Hastings and Ben Afshar earned starts.

“In the end, that’s what it’s about, isn’t it?” Smith said. “There’s a lot of ingredients that went into today… The objective of the game was always to win it, and I’m really grateful for that.”

The coach rotated his squad to build depth ahead of crucial fixtures: a Champions Cup last-16 clash with the Bulls next Saturday, a potential home quarter-final, and URC double-header in South Africa against the Lions and Stormers next month.

Impactful Bench and Debut Heroics

Tries came from Johnny Matthews, debutant Fergus Watson, Max Williamson, Seb Stephen, and Sam Talakia. Bench players Jack Oliver, Alex Samuel, and Alex Craig provided vital momentum.

Smith praised Watson’s performance after a first half starved of wide ball. “We didn’t get the ball as wide as we wanted in the first half,” he noted. “I thought that was the biggest change in the second part of the game. Again, he did really, really well.”
