New North-End Elementary School Completes Construction
A long-anticipated elementary school in Halifax’s north end will welcome students this month after overcoming multiple delays. Officials confirm St. Joseph’s-Alexander McKay Elementary will open its doors on February 18 following final inspections of the Russell Street facility.
Modern Facility Features
The newly constructed building replaces the previous structure demolished in 2022, offering capacity for 515 students from pre-primary through Grade 6. Designed as a bright, modern educational space, the facility incorporates significant input from educators regarding gymnasium, cafeteria, and library configurations.
Transition Timeline
Construction crews completed major work on February 2, allowing staff to begin system testing and orientation this week. Students will have no classes from February 13-17 to enable classroom relocation from their temporary location at École Beaufort on Walnut Street.
Childcare Center Addition
The property includes a 58-space childcare facility scheduled to open within months, operated by an independent provider. Educational officials emphasize this addition addresses critical community needs beyond standard classroom functions.
