Diane Hutchinson breaks down in tears following a traumatic hospital visit where doctors deliver crushing news about her health.

Urgent Hospital Appointment Turns Tragic

Diane Hutchinson experiences severe abdominal pains, prompting an emergency hospital appointment while her husband Tony is away. A reminder for the urgent visit heightens her anxiety, leading to emotional scenes as she processes the devastating diagnosis.

Exiting the hospital, Diane collapses into a chair, drops her handbag, and sobs uncontrollably upon learning she has advanced ovarian cancer. The disease has spread to her lymph nodes, liver, and the lining of her lungs.

Limited Treatment Options Ahead

Doctors outline sparse treatment possibilities due to the cancer’s progression. Chemotherapy remains an option, though its effectiveness remains uncertain.

The Hollyoaks production team collaborates with Ovarian Cancer Action for accurate portrayal. Studies from the charity reveal that over 75% of women receive an advanced-stage diagnosis.

Confiding in Loved Ones

Diane first shares her diagnosis with Nancy Osborne and Leela Dexter, who encourage her to inform Tony. Tony reacts with heartbreak but insists on seeking a second opinion.

As Mother’s Day nears, daughter Dee-Dee unknowingly directs jabs at Diane amid her turmoil.

Alex Fletcher on Portraying the Storyline

Alex Fletcher, who plays Diane, shares: “This storyline has been a completely new challenge for me and something I’ve never explored before. Unfortunately, in some way or another many of us have been touched by cancer, I know my family certainly has this past year, so the storyline can be very relatable.

‘At times it’s been difficult to film but I’m glad that Hollyoaks are telling this story and raising awareness about ovarian cancer, with the hope that it encourages people to prioritise their health.’

The diagnosis forms part of Fletcher’s exit after 16 years on the soap.
