A driver involved in a tragic collision with a freight train at a rural level crossing faces charges of careless driving causing death after his wife perished in the crash.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Haydn Thomas Mansell, 40, was operating a Mitsubishi Triton near Redmond, about 400 kilometers south of Perth, in July 2025. The vehicle struck a grain train on Redmond-Hay River Road, resulting in the immediate death of his 29-year-old wife, Cailee Mansell, seated in the passenger position.

The couple’s three children, also passengers, sustained minor injuries and received medical attention. Two train crew members escaped physical harm but underwent treatment for shock following the event.

Court Appearance and Charges

Mansell entered a not guilty plea during his appearance in Albany Magistrates Court on a single count of careless driving causing death, grievous bodily harm, or bodily harm.

He spoke only briefly in court to confirm his plea. Prosecutors outlined a roster of 21 potential witnesses, though not all are anticipated to testify.

Upcoming Trial and Safety Concerns

The case heads to a two-day trial scheduled for October. The accident has intensified demands for enhanced safety measures at regional rail crossings, with one local resident labeling the Redmond site as “horrible.”
