Incident During EFL Trophy Match

Jack Fletcher received a six-game suspension from the Football Association after using a homophobic insult in an EFL Trophy match against Barnsley earlier this season. The Manchester United youngster, son of Under-18s head coach Darren Fletcher, was sent off during the October fixture against the League One side’s first team.

Fletcher became involved in a heated exchange with an older opponent, who made remarks about his father and twin brother, Tyler. In a moment of frustration, Fletcher questioned the opponent’s knowledge of his background and used an offensive term.

FA Investigation and Provocation Claims

The FA charged Fletcher, who explained that he did not intend the word as a homophobic slur. Both the governing body and the opponent accepted this explanation. Referee Will Davis, standing just one yard away, confirmed hearing the term.

Fletcher described feeling provoked, citing two off-the-ball incidents and an incident where his Achilles tendon was stamped on during the game.

Suspension Details and Penalty

The ban consists of two games for the red card and an additional four games for an aggravated breach of FA Rule E3.1. Fletcher has served three of the additional games, with only non-first-team competitive fixtures counting toward the suspension. He has missed the last three Premier League 2 matches and will return for the Friday night game against Birmingham City.

In addition to the ban, Fletcher faces a £1,500 fine and must attend FA education sessions.

Fletcher’s Apology and Club Response

The player, who has featured three times for Manchester United’s first team this season, expressed deep regret. He stated: “I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment. Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game. I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values.”

Fletcher emphasized that the incident does not align with his character or principles and accepted the FA charge promptly. Manchester United has implemented measures to improve players’ awareness of discriminatory language and its impacts.
