James McAvoy stunned fans with a casual revelation about his family life, announcing a four-year-old son with wife Lisa Liberati. The Scottish actor, father to 15-year-old Brendan from his previous marriage to Anne-Marie Duff, shared that parenting at 42 proves easier than his first experience. He explained, “Having a kid at 42 is definitely easier in some ways—I worry less. I’m a bit more philosophical. But it’s also harder, because you’re just older and tireder.”

Pathways Diverge for the McAvoy Brothers

The news likely came as a surprise to McAvoy’s younger half-brother Donald, with whom he maintains no contact. While James enjoys Hollywood success and promotes his directorial debut California Schemin’, Donald faces a potential life sentence at HMP Saughton in Edinburgh after slashing a fellow inmate’s face with a hidden blade.

The brothers share little beyond their late father, James Senior, a former bus driver and builder. Their estrangement ensures neither James Senior nor Donald will ever meet James’s children.

Early Family Split and Upbringing

James was seven when his parents, James Senior and Elizabeth Johnstone, separated. Raised by his maternal grandparents—James Johnstone, a butcher, and Mary, a lorry driver—on a council estate in Glasgow’s Drumchapel district, he lived alongside sister Joy, now an actress in TV’s Two Doors Down. The grandparents, parents to five children themselves, took in James, Joy, and occasionally Elizabeth.

James Senior lived nearby with partner Mary McKinnon and son Donald. Contact with his father ended when James turned 12. James has described the rift briefly: “It’s boring. I don’t want to talk about it. I know what happened and I know what didn’t happen.”

James Senior attributed the breakdown to his son’s resentment toward his new partner. He stated, “I think James still had hopes of me and his mum sorting things out. He started refusing to see me because he didn’t like Mary. In the end, I took a step back rather than upset him.”

In 2006, after James’s Rising Star BAFTA win, his father publicly sought reconciliation: “I’d love to get in touch, but I don’t know how to reach him.” James dismissed it, telling The Guardian: “Quite strange… I can’t really be bothered with it. If I was less secure in myself, I might be more interested. But I know what made me, I know why I am the way I am.”

James’s Rise to Stardom

The estrangement did not hinder James’s career. He entered acting through work experience with director David Hayman at school, later graduating from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Breakthroughs included Shameless on Channel 4 in 2004, where he met Anne-Marie Duff, and Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. BAFTA nominations followed for The Last King of Scotland and Atonement.

Donald’s Troubled Path

Donald, by contrast, began a criminal record at 19 with a stabbing conviction in 2008, followed by jail time for abduction and assault over a drug debt. James Senior expressed despair: “I’ve tried everything to keep him straight.” He hoped for reconciliation with James: “It would be great to talk, but it’s been so long.”

James Senior died while Donald was imprisoned; details remain private. In 2013, both faced drug charges but were bailed. Donald inherited a substantial estate sum, noted during a 2023 hearing. Serving a five-year-plus sentence for offenses including road rage, his release planned for 2025 was delayed by 15 months for prison contraband.

Currently, Donald, with over 40 convictions, admitted assaulting Colin Lindsay with a bladed implement on October 21, 2025, causing severe, permanent injury. Judge Norman McFadyen remarked, “It is clear to me that you have met the criteria for risk needed for the making of an order for lifelong restriction.” A report is pending; the case resumes June 9, 2026. Donald’s lawyer, Ian Sievwright, highlighted the inheritance: “He has inherited a sizeable amount of money from his father’s estate, and that may allow him the financial resources to avoid criminality… He’s determined for his daughter’s sake.”

James’s Current Family and Career

James met Lisa Liberati, a production assistant, on Split in Philadelphia while separating from Anne-Marie after 11 years. They married in 2022, confirmed publicly then, and live between London and Philadelphia. Post-divorce, they announced their relationship via Instagram.

Balancing fatherhood and work, James reflected: “I’m getting all that first-timer stress in my 40s.” He views directing as a chance to portray working-class Scots authentically: “I want to tell stories about working-class people with backgrounds that I recognise… I don’t know why they can’t be entertaining adventures,” critiquing typical depictions of Scottish struggles.
