James Tolkan, celebrated for his iconic roles in Back to the Future and Top Gun, passed away on March 26 at age 94.
The veteran actor, best known as the stern Mr. Strickland in the first two Back to the Future films and his character’s grandfather in the third installment, died peacefully at his home in Saranac Lake, New York. Officials announced his passing on the official Back to the Future website, though the cause remains undisclosed.
Tolkan leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, and three nieces. The couple first met on the set of the 1971 off-Broadway production Pinkville, where he starred and she worked as a prop girl. They wed later that year in Lake Placid.
From Theater to Hollywood
Tolkan honed his craft studying under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg at The Actors Studio, dedicating 25 years to New York theater. While rooted in New York City, he landed key film roles, collaborating with director Sidney Lumet on Serpico (1973), Prince of the City (1981), and Family Business (1989).
In 1983, opportunities drew him to California and Canada for WarGames, marking a pivotal shift in his career.
Signature Roles and Legacy
Tolkan achieved lasting fame as Mr. Strickland across the Back to the Future trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990) and as Commander Tom ‘Stinger’ Jardian opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun (1986). Earlier, he tackled a dual role in Woody Allen’s Love and Death (1975), portraying Napoleon and his doppelgänger.
His extensive filmography through 2011 includes The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Amityville Horror (1979), Wolfen (1981), Masters of the Universe (1987), True Blood (1989), Opportunity Knocks (1990), and Dick Tracy (1990).
Early Life and Journey to Stardom
Born June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan faced early upheaval when his parents divorced at age 14. He biked from Chicago to Tucson, Arizona, graduating from Amphitheater High School in 1949. A brief Navy service during the Korean War preceded brief stints at Coe College and the University of Iowa.
With just $75, he boarded a bus to New York City, labored on the docks, and eventually joined The Actors Studio to pursue acting.
Back to the Future Cast Mourns Another Loss
Tolkan’s death arrives soon after fellow Back to the Future cast member Matt Clark succumbed on March 15 at 89 to complications from back surgery. Clark, memorable as Chester the Bartender in Back to the Future Part III alongside Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Mary Steenburgen, passed at his Austin, Texas, home, his wife Sharon confirmed.
