Kylie Minogue is set to share intimate details of her romance with late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence in a new Netflix documentary premiering later this year. The project promises unprecedented revelations from the singer, who dated the rock icon from 1989 to 1991.
A Relationship That Redefined Her Image
The pairing captivated global audiences, transforming Minogue from the bubbly ‘girl next door’ of Neighbours into a bolder rock persona. Sources close to the production highlight Netflix’s excitement, stating executives anticipate Minogue will speak more candidly than ever. ‘It was a huge deal at the time,’ one insider notes, ‘shifting Kylie’s image from wholesome soap star to something trendier and rockier. She adored Michael, but it was troubled—he was troubled—and she’ll now share bombshell material.’
From Concert Meeting to Red Carpet Debut
Minogue, then 21, first met Hutchence at an INXS concert after her Neighbours co-star and boyfriend Jason Donovan secured tickets. Following her split from Donovan, the romance blossomed. The couple made their public debut on the red carpet for her 1989 film The Delinquents, where Minogue debuted a striking pixie haircut.
Reflecting in 2019, Minogue shared: ‘Sex, love, food, drugs, music, travel, books—you name it, he wanted to experience it. As his partner, I got to experience a lot of that as well. If you’re a sensual being, all of your senses need stimulation. He definitely awakened my desire for things in my world.’
The Tragic End and Lasting Friendship
The relationship ended in 1991 when Minogue flew from Japan to New York to break it off. They stayed close friends until Hutchence’s death by suicide in 1997 at age 37. Found hanged in a Sydney hotel room after consuming drugs and alcohol, he had left a distressed voicemail for his manager.
Hutchence later dated supermodel Helena Christensen and Paula Yates, with whom he shared daughter Tiger Lily. Yates died of a drug overdose three years later at age 41, leaving the child orphaned at four.
Beyond Romance: Cancer Battle and Production Details
The documentary also covers Minogue’s 2004 breast cancer diagnosis and recovery. Insiders describe it as her first major tell-all: ‘It’s compulsive viewing.’
Emmy-winning director Michael Harte helms the project, produced by Ventureland, the team behind Netflix hits like the WHAM! documentary and David and Victoria Beckham’s series.
