Landlord fined £12,500 for unlicensed HMO

A Tottenham landlord and managing agent have been slapped with a £12,500 effective after failing to license their HMO, which was discovered to have severe hazards.

Haringey council acquired a criticism about damp and mold within the rented house.

Throughout their investigations, enforcement officers found that the property was working as an unlicensed ‘Further’ HMO.

Cllr Sarah Williams, cupboard member for housing and planning and deputy chief of the council, stated: “This case makes our place completely clear, Haringey is not going to tolerate landlords or brokers who put residents in danger.

“Each property should meet authorized requirements, and those that ignore their obligations will face decisive motion.

“Our precedence is defending tenants and driving up requirements throughout the personal rented sector, and we’ll proceed to pursue anybody who fails to offer protected, safe and correctly managed houses.”

The property was situated on Clonmell Highway, N17.

The managing agent appealed the penalty to the First Tier Tribunal (FTT). Nevertheless, the Tribunal dismissed the attraction, describing it as misguided, and upheld in favour of the council.

The agent was ordered to pay a £10,000 effective and has been added to the Higher London Authority’s Rogue Landlord and Agent Checker, a public register of landlords and brokers fined or convicted of housing offences. The proprietor stays responsible for a separate £2,500 civil penalty.

After the enforcement motion the property has now been licensed, and an enchancment discover issued by the council has led to the problems being addressed.
