Manchester City anticipates a significant lift ahead of their clash with Fulham, as Abdukodir Khusanov clears a fitness concern and John Stones nears a comeback.
Khusanov Ready After Liverpool Scare
The 21-year-old Uzbek center-back exited Sunday’s victory over Liverpool with a potential concussion but Pep Guardiola confirms he is fit to feature against Fulham. Khusanov has started his last 10 matches for City this season, earning his place after injuries sidelined Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias. His consistent displays have impressed, with only Nico Gonzalez boasting a longer starting streak.
Even with Ruben Dias returning and new signings Marc Guehi and Max Alleyne joining the squad, Khusanov remains a viable option. Guardiola highlights the defender’s physical prowess, sharp decision-making, and rapid progress in English.
“He doesn’t speak like William Shakespeare but he’s getting better and better,” Guardiola said with a laugh. “He understands what we want and every time he is getting better. He is so intelligent. Normally you have the opinion that he is so physical and so strong and so fast that he’s not able to think but it’s completely the opposite—he always taking good decisions.”
Guardiola added: “His speed is difficult [for attackers]. He is so, so fast. To recover positions [is one of his best attributes] but don’t get confused—he is so intelligent. That’s why on the ball he is getting better and always encourages me [that he] will improve. I think he can improve at that age; he is always open-minded. Man City have a player and a central defender for many, many years.”
Stones Poised for Squad Return
England international John Stones could rejoin the City squad for the first time since early December’s encounter with Fulham. The defender has endured another injury setback but is now close to full recovery.
