Manchester United confirm the departures of academy graduates Joe Hugill, Rhys Bennett, and Toby Collyer as the winter transfer window nears its close.
Rhys Bennett Joins Fleetwood Town Permanently
Rhys Bennett, a 22-year-old defender, completes a permanent transfer to Fleetwood Town after a successful loan spell with the League Two club last season. Bennett stayed with United through the summer but faced personal tragedy in October with the loss of his father, David. In a recent interview with MUTV before Christmas, he described the period as “the most difficult time ever” for his family and opened up about mental health and suicide prevention. As the skipper of United’s 2022 FA Youth Cup-winning team, Bennett now reunites with Ethan Ennis, who joined Fleetwood on loan last summer.
Speaking to Fleetwood TV, Bennett expressed excitement about the move: “I’ve always been close with Ethan. He’s a top player and a top lad, so I’m looking forward to playing alongside him again.” Reflecting on his time at United, he added: “I spent 16 years there, and they helped me every step of the way. I’m really thankful to everyone for helping me grow, on and off the pitch.”
Toby Collyer Heads to Hull City on Loan
Toby Collyer moves to Championship side Hull City on a loan deal. The midfielder, who progressed through United’s academy alongside Bennett and Hugill, signs to gain valuable experience in a competitive league.
After putting pen to paper, Collyer shared his thoughts: “It’s been a while coming. I know there was interest and a possibility in the summer, but now I’m really happy to have been able to make it happen in this window.” He highlighted the fit with Hull’s style: “The style of play the manager likes to bring to his players is really good for me – high energy, high output. I would say I’m an intelligent player and I always like to improve. Hard work is fundamental – otherwise, you won’t get to where you want to get to.”
Collyer embraced the challenges ahead: “The Championship is different to the Premier League – it’s hectic, but I like it. You face challenges every day in training and in matches, and it’s a great league to get better. My target was to get back out and play as many minutes as possible in a different environment and challenge myself.” He concluded: “I’m looking forward to the atmosphere, seeing the fans and playing with my new teammates. I’ll always work hard for the badge and for the fans.”
Joe Hugill’s Permanent Switch to Kilmarnock
Striker Joe Hugill secures a permanent move to Scottish club Kilmarnook, marking the end of his six-year stint at United’s academy.
Following the confirmation, Hugill posted on social media to express gratitude: “Thank you to everyone (at Man United) for the past 6 years. The players, the staff, the fans and everyone connected to the club who have made me love every minute along the way. I will always be beyond grateful for my time here, and the memories will live with me forever.”
These moves allow the young talents to continue their development away from Old Trafford, while United manager Michael Carrick refines the squad ahead of the deadline.
