New Charges Filed Against Crown Princess’ Son
Norwegian authorities have arrested Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, on multiple new criminal charges just one day before his scheduled rape trial. Oslo police confirmed the 28-year-old was taken into custody Sunday evening for alleged assault, knife threats, and violation of a restraining order.
Legal Proceedings Intensify
The arrest comes as Høiby faces 38 separate charges in an upcoming six-week trial beginning Tuesday, including four counts of rape and domestic violence against a former partner. While the royal family member reportedly plans to plead guilty to minor charges, he maintains innocence regarding serious allegations including sexual abuse. Convictions on major charges could result in up to 10 years imprisonment.
“We’ve requested four weeks’ detention to prevent potential re-offending,” stated Andreas Kruszewski, an attorney at the Oslo police district. “The arrest relates specifically to new allegations of physical violence, weapon threats, and restraining order violations.”
Royal Family Distances Itself
In an official statement, the Norwegian Palace confirmed Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit won’t attend court proceedings involving Mette-Marit’s biological son. The future king emphasized: “Marius Borg Høiby isn’t a member of the Royal House but remains a valued family member. As a Norwegian citizen, he holds equal rights and responsibilities under our rule of law.”
Epstein Connection Surfaces
The arrest coincides with scrutiny of Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s past interactions with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Recently released court documents reveal email exchanges between the royal and Epstein from 2012, discussing social engagements and family matters.
In a statement to Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Mette-Marit expressed regret: “I showed poor judgment and deeply regret any association with Epstein. I take responsibility for not investigating his background thoroughly.” The correspondence included commentary about European royal weddings, with the Crown Princess describing one Luxembourg ceremony as “boring… like some old movie.”
Expanding Criminal Case
Prosecutors have progressively expanded charges against Høiby since initial allegations surfaced. Recent additions include drug trafficking offenses, abuse of public officials, death threats, and multiple violent acts. The defendant remains detained pending resolution of both the new arrest charges and the impending rape trial.
