A corporal with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the Northwest Territories pleaded not guilty to a sexual assault charge during a court appearance in territorial court.
Charge Details
Derek Young, a corporal stationed in the N.W.T., faces the charge filed in November 2025. Investigators launched a probe into his conduct nine months earlier.
The Calgary Police Service led the investigation due to the absence of an independent oversight body in the territory. Officials confirm the alleged offense occurred in Yellowknife while Young was off duty. Authorities suspended him with pay pending the outcome.
RCMP Statement
Chief Supt. Dyson Smith, head of the N.W.T. RCMP, emphasized the seriousness of the matter. “We take these allegations and our commitment to transparency very seriously,” Smith stated. “Public trust is essential for the N.W.T. RCMP to effectively fulfill its mandate.”
Upcoming Proceedings
Young’s next court date is set for April, though no trial date has been scheduled.
