Prison Officer Jailed for Illegal Affair with Gangster Inmate

Correction Officer Sentenced for Prohibited Relationship

A 27-year-old prison employee has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years imprisonment after admitting to a clandestine relationship with an incarcerated gang member. Charlotte Winstanley engaged in the illicit affair while employed at HMP Lindholme in South Yorkshire.

Forbidden Romance Details Revealed

Court documents revealed Winstanley developed an intimate relationship with Jabhari Blair, a 30-year-old inmate serving a 13-year sentence for violent offenses. Evidence showed the pair exchanged explicit messages through contraband devices, including one where Winstanley wrote: “I’m literally praying to have your baby.”

The relationship reportedly included coordinated “date nights” within prison facilities and continued for approximately three years, persisting even after Winstanley’s suspension from duty.

Judicial Condemnation

During sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court, the presiding judge characterized the case as particularly egregious. “This represents an exceptionally serious breach of professional conduct,” the judge stated. “The corruption displayed persisted over an extended period and involved multiple violations of prison regulations.”

Investigators uncovered evidence that Winstanley smuggled prohibited items including electronic devices into the facility. She additionally shared confidential prison information with Blair, including operational details about cell searches and inmate transfers.

Pattern of Professional Misconduct

The court heard how Winstanley discussed her inappropriate relationship with a colleague who later faced similar charges. Authorities became suspicious when prison administrators noticed irregularities in Winstanley’s conduct, including early arrivals and extended periods spent in secured areas with the inmate.

After her suspension in November 2022, Winstanley attempted to maintain contact through fraudulent email accounts and prison visitation systems. Recorded communications showed ongoing declarations of affection, including expressions of hope regarding pregnancy.

Winstanley pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office and unauthorized transmission of prison images. Her legal representative stated she expressed remorse for her actions during proceedings.

Blair received additional prison time for contraband possession charges related to the illicit relationship. Both sentences reportedly reflected adjustments for procedural delays in prosecution.

The judge concluded sentencing remarks by emphasizing the seriousness of institutional corruption: “When correctional officers compromise their professional duties, it represents a fundamental breach of public trust that typically warrants significant custodial consequences.”
