Santander plans to close 40 high street branches across the UK by the end of May 2026. Earlier this year, the bank announced 44 closures nationwide, including four in January. The move stems from customers increasingly shifting to online services, with 96% of transactions now handled digitally.
These closures put 291 jobs at risk. They follow a March 2025 announcement of 95 branch shutdowns that impacted 750 employees. In July 2025, Santander’s UK chief executive at the time, Mike Regnier, noted that around 2,000 jobs had been lost in the prior year due to restructuring. He indicated that further redundancies “might well be” likely.
Customer Access Alternatives
Santander commits to replacing affected branches with community bankers operating through Santander Local stores or shared banking hubs. This ensures continued service access for customers in impacted areas.
