Students from the University of Regina’s Muslim community united to distribute more than 100 winter packages and hot meals to individuals experiencing homelessness across the city. Volunteers handed out the supplies on foot and by vehicle, starting at Carmichael Outreach and covering various neighborhoods.
Collaborative Effort by Community Organizations
The event drew support from six key groups, including the Muslim Medical Association of Canada, Saskatchewan Arabs Society, Muslims Professionals Society, Islamic Relief at the University of Regina, and One Faith Foundation. This annual tradition has grown over the years, fostering community service rooted in faith.
Motivation from Islamic Principles
Participants emphasized that their actions stem from religious values. Bushra Alzawaid, a first-year student at the University of Regina, explained, “This act is part of the Islamic pillars called Zakaat, which involves giving back to the community through charity.”
Now in its third year in Regina and fifth in Saskatoon, the initiative continues to expand. Following the Regina distribution this weekend, organizers plan to replicate the effort in Saskatoon next weekend.
As Ramadan approaches, the students aim to host additional events that align service with their faith, strengthening community ties and support for those in need.
