Tiger Woods spent eight hours in a Martin County Jail cell following a crash where authorities alleged he drove impaired. The 50-year-old golf legend exited the facility around 11 p.m. ET on Friday after processing on two misdemeanor charges, including a public mugshot release.
Details of the Florida Crash
The incident unfolded around 2 p.m. ET near Woods’ Jupiter, Florida, home. Driving a Range Rover, Woods approached excessive speed as a pickup truck towing a pressure cleaner trailer slowed to turn into a driveway. In a last-second attempt to pass, Woods’ vehicle struck the trailer and flipped onto its side.
Arrest and Impairment Signs
Emergency responders noted Woods displayed signs of impairment upon arrival. DUI investigators conducted roadside tests, accounting for his prior injuries and surgeries. A breathalyzer test at the jail registered triple zeros, indicating no alcohol involvement. Authorities suspect medication contributed to his condition.
Woods refused a requested urine test, leading to charges of DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Florida law mandates at least eight hours of incarceration post-DUI arrest before bond release.
Sheriff’s Safety Precautions
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek addressed the detention during a Friday press conference. “We’re the sheriff’s office. We know we arrested a high-profile figure,” Budensiek stated. “If you break the law, we’re going to follow the law.”
To protect Woods, officials isolated him from general population. “We’re going to make sure he’s safe,” Budensiek added. “He’s not going to be with other inmates that could hurt him or try to capitalize on what he did. He’ll pay the price, but he’s not going to pay the price by getting punished in jail.”
