President Donald Trump highlighted conditions in downtown Los Angeles by sharing a video on Truth Social showing a woman prying open a fire hydrant with a wrench to wash her blankets.

The footage captures the woman filling a cup from the hydrant, placing it on the sidewalk, and pouring it into a container with fabric. She repeats the process, emptying and refilling the container in full view. A narrator in the video states, ‘This is downtown Los Angeles, California, where Hollywood is at. This is not a movie, though, it’s not a joke, and it’s not a publicity stunt. This is the reality that people are living in.’

The video has attracted nearly 1.6 million views. Trump has consistently pointed to challenges in California, including homelessness, crime, drug issues, and fraud.

Upcoming Major Events in Los Angeles

Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Summer Olympics and select FIFA World Cup matches this summer during Trump’s second term.

Follow-Up Post and Online Reactions

Trump followed up with a screenshot from an X user noting that ‘Los Angeles fire hydrants seem to be working just fine now.’

Social media users reacted strongly, with one stating, ‘Los Angeles — supposed to host the OLYMPICS in 2028 — now has fire hydrants turning into where homeless and poor people wash their clothes.’ Another commented, ‘Oh my gosh. How can Los Angeles host the Olympics when we have people living on the streets?’ Comments described the scene as ‘shameful’ and criticized high taxes alongside persistent homelessness.

Past Fire Hydrant Challenges

During last year’s Palisades fire, when over 1,000 structures burned and some hydrants lost pressure, Trump blamed Governor Gavin Newsom, posting that ‘Governor Gavin Newscum’ was responsible for ‘no water for fire hydrants.’

Newsom ordered an investigation into the hydrant issues. Officials from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power explained that water supplies held, but demand surged to four times normal levels, causing pressure drops.

Users referenced this incident, with one noting, ‘Surprised to see a working fire hydrant…’ and another adding, ‘At least there’s water in the hydrants!!!’

Los Angeles Mayoral Primary Ahead

Mayor Karen Bass faces a primary election in June amid scrutiny over her handling of the Palisades fire. A UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs poll shows Bass leading likely voters at 25%, followed by Spencer Pratt at 11% and Councilmember Nithya Raman at 9%.

A UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll of 840 likely voters, conducted March 9-15, mirrors this: Bass at 25%, Raman at 17%, and Pratt at 14%.
