Britain’s energy regulator has granted an electricity supply licence to Tesla Energy Ventures Limited, a Tesla subsidiary. This approval enables the company to deliver power to households and businesses throughout the country.

Key Details of the Approval

The licence took effect on Wednesday following a comprehensive assessment from July 2025 to March 2026. The Gas and Electricity Markets Authority formally endorsed the decision. Ofgem confirms the licence focuses solely on supply activities, distinct from Tesla Motors Limited’s existing generation licence.

Market Entry and Expansion

Tesla Energy Ventures plans to introduce a retail electricity service akin to Tesla Electric, launched in Texas in 2022. This step allows the firm to compete in the UK retail energy sector while expanding its battery storage, solar, and energy management offerings.

Regulatory Obligations

The company must uphold consumer protection, fair customer treatment, financial responsibility, transparent billing, and strong operational standards. Ofgem will oversee compliance and enforce measures under the Electricity Act 1989 and Standard Licence Conditions, such as penalties or licence modifications if needed.

Company Background

Based in Manchester, Tesla Energy Ventures applied for the licence last summer. Andrew Payne, head of Tesla’s European energy operations, signed the application. Tesla already markets home batteries, EV chargers, and solar products in Britain, building a solid customer foundation.
