Massive Explosion Hits Valero Texas Refinery, Shelter Alert Issued

A powerful explosion rocked the Valero oil refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, shaking homes and prompting a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.

Incident Details

The blast occurred yesterday evening at the facility, which processes 380,000 barrels of fuel daily. Thick smoke rose high into the sky, and the explosion’s rumble reached as far as 11 miles away in the east Texas area near the Louisiana border.

Port Arthur emergency management officials issued an alert stating: “To ensure the safety of all residents in the vicinity and in light of the recent explosion at the Valero refinery, an immediate shelter in place is ordered.”

Currently, a fire burns in one unit at the refinery. All personnel have been accounted for, with no injuries reported.

Response and Road Closures

Valero’s emergency response team is on site, coordinating with local authorities. As a precaution, Jefferson County officials closed State Highways 82 and 87.

Valero emphasized: “Valero’s emergency response team is responding and coordinating with local authorities. As always, the safety of our workers is our top priority.”
