Wolverhampton city centre boasts a thriving new bar defying hospitality challenges. Perfect Ale, Cask & Keg, known as PACK, draws crowds with its live music lineup and diverse craft beer selection. Located in a former KFC near the Man On The Oss statue, the venue opened in November and targets the over-25 demographic, particularly appealing to those over 40.

Unique Drinks and Atmosphere

PACK stands out with its extensive cask ales and specialty brews, including Hofmeister, Rattler, Bristol Beer Factory, Attic, and Belgian La Trappe. General manager Andy Evans emphasizes the bar’s focus on real ale enthusiasts. “One of the biggest compliments is that we’ve created a space for people over 40 to enjoy,” Andy states. “Most real ale and craft beer drinkers fall into that age bracket. Cask drinkers tend to be older too.”

The yellow walls feature Steampunk props, while the upstairs area offers a pool table, table football, slot machines, and quirky pub signs from across the country. No mainstream lagers like Carling, Stella, or Strongbow appear on the menu.

Live Music and Entertainment Focus

Local bands perform regularly on Fridays and Saturdays, enhancing the venue’s appeal. The building’s history as a music shop before becoming a KFC adds fitting charm. Andy discovered an old Mike Lloyd Music poster in his attic, now displayed inside.

The bar’s premium sound system, installed by the technician behind Bilston’s The Robin venue, represents the largest investment. “Artists plug their mixer into the stage box, distributing sound throughout the ground and first floors,” Andy explains. This setup mirrors Katie O’Brien’s in Birmingham, easing performances for musicians.

Future Plans and City Centre Boost

Upcoming developments include a basement games room for Dungeons & Dragons and a dedicated live music space. Despite a tough launch in November—originally planned for May—reception remains strong. Match days for Wolverhampton Wanderers and events at The Halls, like Robbie Williams’ recent show, boost footfall significantly.

“Wolves matches provide a lifeline for city pubs,” Andy notes. After 30 years at Tarmac and redundancy, he co-owns PACK with Nicc Bennett and Simon Monk. The venue revitalizes Wolverhampton’s city centre amid recent trade struggles.
