Michael Carrick continues to impress as Manchester United’s interim manager, with insights from his close collaborator Jonathan Woodgate shedding light on his success.
Carrick’s Impressive Run
Carrick took charge in January following Ruben Amorim’s departure and Darren Fletcher’s brief caretaker stint. He quickly delivered results, securing victories over Manchester City and Arsenal, and winning six of his first seven matches. This propelled United to third in the league standings.
The team encountered its first major challenge with a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Newcastle on Wednesday. Early elimination from the FA Cup now provides Carrick additional preparation time ahead of a key matchup against Aston Villa next weekend.
Woodgate’s Endorsement
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock shared details from a conversation with Woodgate in November, shortly after they departed Middlesbrough. “I think he’s done an unbelievable job and, you know what, it’s no surprise either,” Warnock stated. “I think he’s so relaxed, so calm.”
Warnock recounted asking Woodgate about Carrick: “I was speaking to him… and said, ‘What’s [Carrick] like?’ And he said, ‘Brilliant.’ Obviously, he’s gone in there and he’s really close with him but [Woodgate] said the level of detail, everything he does. And you think, ‘If you’re doing that at United, they’ll buy into it straight away.’ That’s what they needed as well.”
New Coaching Setup
Woodgate joined United as interim first-team coach in January, marking his second collaboration with Carrick after nearly three years together at Middlesbrough. The refreshed backroom team also features assistant Steve Holland and club legend Jonny Evans, all focused on restoring winning momentum against Villa.
Reflecting on the recent loss, Carrick emphasized learning opportunities: “We’ve got to make the best out of it, we’ve got to make it a help. There’s no sense in not learning lessons and understanding why tonight was what it was… It’s an important game, it’s a big week for us… We’re in a position now that we’ve put ourselves in… that can be really exciting.”
