A 14-year-old schoolboy lost his life in a targeted daylight shooting in Woolwich, southeast London. Police identified the victim as Eghosa Ogbebor, who was discovered unresponsive on Lord Warwick Street following emergency calls around 3:40 p.m. on April 2.
Arrests in Ongoing Murder Investigation
Authorities arrested two teenagers, aged 14 and 16, along with an 18-year-old man, all on suspicion of murder. The suspects remain in custody as detectives continue their probe. A forensic tent now stands on the terrace above local shops and The Greyhound pub near the scene.
Witness Accounts from the Scene
A barmaid at The Greyhound pub reported hearing a loud bang outside but did not see the incident. She noted, “I think one of the people involved jumped off to try and get away. I think one of them may have lived in the flats.”
The pub’s landlady confirmed police requested CCTV footage from the establishment.
Nearby, a Jamaican food van operator had stepped away briefly to fetch a generator when the shooting occurred. Upon returning, he saw police swarming the area and speaking with pub patrons.
A local resident mentioned rumors that the weapon ended up in the Thames River. He arrived at the scene ten minutes after the gunfire and witnessed armed officers detaining a suspect outside a Premier shop. The resident described it as a planned attack, with reports of about 15 boys armed with machetes—details police have yet to verify. He added that individuals involved had been spotted in the area for the past week searching for someone.
Police Statement and Community Response
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card expressed condolences: “Our thoughts remain with Eghosa’s family and loved ones; they are being supported by specially trained officers and have asked for privacy at this difficult time.”
She addressed community concerns: “I know the concern this has caused within Woolwich and the wider community, particularly considering Eghosa’s young age. We have an increased police presence around the area.”
Card urged witnesses to come forward: “While we have made three arrests, our investigation continues and I would urge anyone with any information to come forward and speak to officers.”
