Bakery79 Challenges Greggs Dominance

Bakery79, a rising food-to-go chain, positions itself as a strong contender to Greggs in the UK bakery market. Launched early in 2025, the chain has expanded rapidly, opening 12 new sites in former Greggs concessions at Park Garage Group forecourts last March.

With around 80 stores primarily in southern England and select locations in Newcastle, Durham, and Aberdeenshire, Bakery79 shows no signs of slowing. Owners Park Garage Group plan to launch 20 full-service stores and 10 self-service sites by the end of 2026.

Mother’s Day Giveaway for Single Mums

Ahead of expansion, Bakery79 announced free Yum Yums for single mums on Mother’s Day, Sunday, March 15. Single mums can claim their treat between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. by saying ‘Yum Yums for Single Mums’ at the counter. The initiative recognizes single mums balancing childcare, work, and daily responsibilities.

Diverse Menu Highlights

Bakery79 serves breakfast classics like bacon and sausage baps, breakfast pots, potato poppers, and baguettes. Lunch options include pizzas, halloumi bites, chicken bites, sandwiches, and sausage rolls. Sweet treats feature cookies and doughnuts, paired with a range of coffees.

A staff member claims the breakfast bowl surpasses Greggs offerings. Another employee, Jackie, highlights the pastries: ‘In other stores, you usually get a lot of pastry and not much inside, but these are full, especially the ones with beans. The sausage rolls are really nice too.’

Customer Praise and Community Focus

Stores foster a welcoming community atmosphere. Regular customer Emily K notes: ‘The community vibe at Bakery79 makes it special, and the baked goods are to die for!’ Mike C adds: ‘Always fresh, always tasty – Bakery79 is my go-to for a quick bite and great coffee!’

Social media buzz centers on pizzas and Too Good To Go bags. Customers rave about ‘unreal’ pizza slices, now including a Meat Feast option, priced at £2.79—slightly above Greggs’ £2.75 pepperoni slice. TikTok users call the pepperoni the ‘best’ and praise surprise bags filled with sandwiches, baguettes, doughnuts, cookies, and flatbread bowls for £2.95, preventing food waste.

One creator shares: ‘I am obsessed with Bakery79. The food is stunning, and the amount of food for £2.95 a bag is unreal!’ Another from Ashington, Northumberland, exclaims: ‘The stuff in here looks absolutely lush,’ after discovering the chain in a former Greggs spot.
