A determined corgi dashed to first place in Musselburgh’s annual Corgi Derby, motivated by the lure of a hot dog at the finish line.
Islay’s Surprising Triumph
Three-year-old Islay, originally from New Zealand, claimed victory during Saturday’s event. The win caught both Islay and her owner, Carolyne Ricardo, by surprise, as they received confirmation of their entry just two weeks prior.
Carolyne, a New York native and veterinarian at the University of Glasgow, described her pet: “She likes a nap and is a slow starter in the morning, but if she comes across a squirrel, it’s a goner.”
Event Highlights and History
The Corgi Derby has become a beloved Easter family attraction at the racecourse since its debut in 2022. Organized to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee, the race pays tribute to her favored breed.
Now in its fifth year, the competition draws crowds eager to watch the pint-sized participants compete. Aisling Johnston, head of marketing and business development at Musselburgh Racecourse, noted: “It’s no exaggeration to say our little four-legged friends do their best to steal the show.”
