Customers at Nationwide Building Society and other UK banks face a rising threat from counterfeit notes circulating widely. Staff at a Leicestershire branch recently highlighted this issue during a visit by Hinckley and Bosworth MP Dr Luke Evans.

MP Spotlights Counterfeit Concerns

Dr Evans visited the Nationwide branch in Earl Shilton and praised the team’s dedication to maintaining local access and keeping branches operational. He noted a key worry raised by staff: the increasing volume of fake banknotes in circulation.

The MP emphasized the risks, stating, “It’s always concerning to hear of scams operating in your area. While anyone can fall victim to a scam, I’m always acutely aware of the impact on some of the more vulnerable people in our communities.”

He urged caution, adding, “It’s a reminder to always be alert, especially when interacting with people who are demanding cash, or saying that payment has to be made in a certain way – particularly when buying or selling over social media. At the end of the day, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Nationwide Commits to Branch Network

Nationwide plans to keep all its UK branches open until at least 2030, contrasting with widespread closures by other major banks. Dr Evans highlighted the value of in-person banking, saying, “This certainly makes a case for face-to-face interactions and dealing with your bank in person.”

During the visit, staff described strong personal relationships with local customers, who often travel from nearby areas due to trust in specific team members.
