Somerset Wildlife Trust submits a planning application to convert a former dairy farm at Honeygar Farm in Westhay into an internationally recognized hub for lowland peat bog restoration research.

Prime Location for Peat Studies

The site lies on the Somerset Levels and Moors, one of the UK’s few remaining areas with deep lowland peat. These waterlogged wetland ecosystems develop over thousands of years from accumulated dead plant material in acidic conditions at low altitudes below 150 meters.

Peatlands span just 3% of Earth’s land surface yet store more carbon than all global forests combined, according to United Nations data. While most research targets upland peatlands, Honeygar provides a unique chance to develop evidence-based management strategies that boost wildlife, sustainable agriculture, and local economies.

Restoration Efforts Underway

Since acquiring the property in 2021, the trust implements low-intensity grazing and stabilizes water levels to aid natural recovery. Georgia Dent, CEO of Somerset Wildlife Trust, emphasizes the project’s potential: “We aim to establish Honeygar as a global center for research, innovation, and collaboration.”

Dent adds, “Peatlands hold immense value, and careful management offers solutions to major issues like climate adaptation and water quality improvement. The site will unite researchers, academics, land managers, conservationists, businesses, and professionals to share knowledge and tackle local and national challenges.”

Public Access and Amenities Planned

The application proposes enhanced visitor features, including a circular walking trail, viewing platforms, public restrooms, e-bike rentals, and revival of the existing orchard.

Local planning authorities will now review the proposals through the standard process.
