A man has died and two others remain in critical condition following a random stabbing incident in Sydney’s western suburb of Merrylands on Tuesday morning.

Incident Details

Emergency services responded to reports of multiple stabbings around 10am on Merrylands Road near the local train station. Witnesses described a man attacking three people in quick succession: two inside a nearby minimart and a third on the busy street outside.

The male victim, believed to be in his 30s, succumbed to his injuries at the scene despite efforts by paramedics and bystanders to assist. The two other victims, both women, were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Police Response and Arrest

Officers from Cumberland Police Area Command arrived swiftly and established a large crime scene. They received reports that the attacker had fled on foot after the assaults.

A short time later, police arrested a man on Smythe Street in Merrylands. He was taken to Granville Police Station for questioning. Authorities confirm no other suspects are outstanding and describe the attacks as random, with the man known to them from prior mental health-related interactions.

“Police assisted paramedics to treat the injured parties at the scene,” a police spokesperson stated. “Unfortunately, one male was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Homicide Squad is leading the probe, with a crime scene still in place. Detectives urge anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward to assist the investigation.
