Blackmail Scheme Unraveled

A 43-year-old woman targeted men on an adult website, extorting thousands of pounds through threats to expose their activities. Monika Konopska, believed to be originally from Poland, contacted two individuals she had never met, demanding payments under duress.

She posed as ‘Serena’ to her first victim, who sought companionship. After requesting £40 for petrol money, she escalated demands via phone and WhatsApp, insisting on £1,000 and threatening to ’cause a scene.’ Konopska sent photos from the victim’s Facebook, including images of his adult children. The single man, father of two after 27 years alone, paid £1,000 to end the harassment.

Escalation and Intimidation

Weeks later, she demanded another £700 without threats, but received nothing. In May 2024, she sent a photo of his street sign, claiming she had spoken to neighbors. Heavy knocking followed, and the terrified victim hid upstairs, discovering a handwritten note demanding £1,000 more. He complied again after she promised to delete his data.

In June, threats intensified. Posing as ‘Bianca,’ she warned of ‘serious damage’ to his life and reputation, claiming knowledge of his home, work, and family. She criticized the previous contact as ‘too soft’ and set a 3 p.m. deadline. The victim transferred £300, totaling £2,300 extracted.

Second Victim and Arrest

The second man received similar messages in June 2024, including her bank details. Konopska threatened ‘serious damage,’ referencing his routine and home-based work, with a 3 p.m. ultimatum. When he ignored her, follow-ups asked if he anticipated ‘consequences.’ Fearing for his safety, he contacted police.

Investigators traced her through bank details bearing her real name. Konopska claimed the exchanges were ‘role play’ with the first victim and a mistaken send to the second. Chelmsford Crown Court convicted her of blackmail and attempted blackmail.

Sentencing and Impact

Prosecutor Mark Halsey detailed the extortion tactics. Defense counsel Rebecca Malczewski noted Konopska’s job loss as a carer, relationship breakdown, and first foray into sex work amid desperation. She expressed deep remorse, calling the offenses her life’s biggest mistakes.

Judge Recorder Suki Dhadda condemned the ‘deplorable’ acts, emphasizing victims’ fear and distress. ‘You should be ashamed,’ she stated, noting the first victim’s stress and the second’s concerns over exposure. ‘This type of offending caused considerable anxiety; only immediate imprisonment suffices.’

Konopka received an 18-month sentence, serving at least half in custody before licence release. Her settled UK status may face review post-release.
