A 92-year-old man faces murder charges after the death of his 87-year-old wife at their home in Exeter, Devon.

Laurence Billiam appeared before Exeter Magistrates’ Court from his hospital bed, where he confirmed his name, age, and address. His solicitor, Katrina Byrne, sat beside him during the hearing. The court heard allegations that Billiam suffocated his wife, Shirley Billam, with a pillow at their sheltered accommodation before attempting an overdose.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, responded to the couple’s apartment around 12:40 p.m. on Sunday, April 19. Shirley Billam was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting a major police investigation that led to her husband’s arrest.
Next Court Steps
Billiam, one of the oldest individuals charged with murder in recent cases, is scheduled to appear at Exeter Crown Court. No bail application is possible for murder charges at the magistrates’ level.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that emergency crews found Shirley Billam deceased upon arrival. The force states the man and woman knew each other, and no further suspects are being sought. A heightened police presence remains in the area as inquiries continue.
Detective Inspector Guy Biggar, leading the investigation, noted: ‘It is believed that the man and the woman were known to each other. We are not seeking anyone else in connection to the death.’
