In central Newfoundland, the town of Badger has broadened its evacuation orders affecting dozens of homes as water levels in the Exploits River continue to surge. Residents in several vulnerable areas received directives to leave their properties on Thursday, while others remain on high alert, monitoring the escalating flood threat.
Affected Areas Under Evacuation Order
The provincial government issued the expanded alert late Thursday, targeting specific neighborhoods prone to inundation. All properties along Beothuk Street, Earle Street, Kinsman Drive, Main Street, Park Street, River Road, and Sheppard Street must be vacated immediately.
Additionally, even-numbered addresses on the north side of Badger Drive are included in the order. On Maple Street, civic numbers from 34 to 76, as well as 33 to 99 inclusive, face mandatory evacuation.
Registration and Support for Evacuees
Those displaced are instructed to report to the Badger Community Centre located at 19 Maple Street for registration and further assistance. Officials emphasize the importance of swift compliance to ensure safety amid the rising waters.
Emergency Response Escalation
The Department of Justice and Public Safety has elevated the province’s emergency operations centre to Level 2 status, indicating full mobilization of emergency partners. Ongoing monitoring and response efforts are in place to manage the situation.
