Apple continues to face challenges in retaining top AI talent, with several researchers departing for competitors such as Meta and Google DeepMind. This exodus highlights ongoing shifts within the company’s artificial intelligence initiatives.
Senior Siri Executive Joins Google DeepMind
Stuart Bowers, a key figure in Apple’s Siri development, has transitioned to Google DeepMind. As one of the most senior executives overseeing Siri, Bowers saw his responsibilities broaden last year and reported directly to Siri chief Mike Rockwell. His background also includes contributions to Apple’s discontinued self-driving car project.
The move carries a notable irony, as Bowers will now contribute to Google’s Gemini models—technology that Apple integrates into its upcoming Siri enhancements.
Recent Reorganizations in Apple’s AI Teams
Apple’s AI and Siri divisions have undergone significant restructuring over the past year. A prominent change occurred in December when John Giannandrea relinquished his position as Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy. Giannandrea remains in an advisory role through spring 2026 before retiring fully.
These developments come amid Apple’s efforts to advance its AI capabilities, including deeper integration of external models to bolster Siri and related features.
