Rangers Edge Closer to Signing Southampton Striker Cameron Archer

3 Min Read

Rangers received a significant update in their pursuit of Southampton forward Cameron Archer, as the player was omitted from the Saints’ squad for their recent match amid ongoing transfer discussions. The Scottish club aims to secure a new center-forward before the transfer deadline on Monday, following a stalled deal for Ryan Naderi from Hansa Rostock.

Stalled Deal Shifts Focus to Alternatives

Rangers had submitted a record-breaking offer exceeding £3 million for Naderi, but the German side declined to sell during the mid-season window. With time running out, the Ibrox outfit has turned attention to other targets, including Archer, to bolster their attacking options under manager Danny Rohl.

Southampton Manager Addresses Archer’s Absence

The 24-year-old Archer has struggled for consistent starts this season in the Championship, featuring in just six league games and netting four goals across all competitions under managers Will Still and current boss Tonda Eckert. His exclusion from Southampton’s 2-0 victory over Stoke City on Saturday sparked speculation, which Eckert addressed directly.

Eckert confirmed that transfer negotiations are underway, stating, “There’s been some conversations going on over the last few days, and I also think there will be some news over the next two days.” He added, “I wish I could say something, I just say these last days they’re always busy and there are so many conversations, but in both directions. Also for players coming in, sometimes you think you’re very close, sometimes you think you’re very far away, so let’s just see what the next days bring.”

Known for his goal-scoring prowess earlier in his career, Archer could provide Rangers with a proven finisher if a deal materializes before the deadline.

Potential Alternatives for Rangers

While Archer represents an intriguing option, Rangers may explore other prospects to strengthen their squad. Players like Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski have shown scoring ability, but the team seeks a more dependable goal threat to challenge for higher positions and narrow the gap to rivals like Hearts.

As an alternative, Rangers are prepared to compete with Celtic for Motherwell’s Tawanda Maswanhise, especially if the Archer talks do not progress swiftly.
