A massive manhunt unfolded across Louisiana after eight inmates, including three facing murder charges, escaped from the Riverbend Detention Center in East Carroll Parish. The breakout occurred around 1:20 a.m. on Friday, prompting immediate action from state authorities.
Details of the Escape
The fugitives, all classified as violent offenders, included Destin Brogan, 22; Trenton Taplin, 29; Kolin Loney, 21; Savion Wheeler, 31; Hugo Molina, 27; Kevin Slaughter Jr., 25; Krisean Salinas, 21; and Kopelon Vicknair, 19. Officials issued a urgent public warning: ‘Do not approach under any circumstances. If you observe or have information regarding their whereabouts, contact law enforcement immediately.’
Authorities have not disclosed specifics on the method used in the escape, but the incident triggered a coordinated response involving multiple agencies. East Carroll Parish sought support from the Louisiana State Police Detectives-Monroe Field Office to lead the investigation, with assistance from the Madison, East Carroll, and Ouachita parish sheriff’s offices, Alexandria Police Department, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana Probation and Parole, U.S. Marshals Service, and the FBI.
Swift Captures End the Manhunt
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill actively monitored the situation and offered full support from her office, including the Fugitive Apprehension Unit. She stated on social media: ‘I have been in contact with East Carroll Parish Sheriff Wydette Williams and Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association President Kevin Cobb, and have offered the full assistance of my office.’
Progress came quickly. By 9:55 p.m. on Friday, authorities captured Kevin Slaughter Jr. and Kolin Loney. Within hours, Krisean Salinas, Destin Brogan, and Kopelon Vicknair were apprehended. By early Saturday morning, all eight escapees were back in custody.
Background on the Inmates’ Charges
Several of the inmates faced serious accusations. Trenton Taplin was held on second-degree murder charges stemming from a 2020 shooting. Destin Brogan awaited trial for second-degree murder related to a 2022 incident, with his court date set for May 11. Hugo Molina also faced second-degree murder charges. Kolin Loney dealt with multiple felonies, including second-degree murder, alongside prior convictions for burglary and property damage. Kopelon Vicknair was detained on charges connected to a 2023 homicide.
Kevin Slaughter Jr. was accused of aggravated assault, while Krisean Salinas had a history of multiple arrests. The reasons for Savion Wheeler’s detention remain unclear.
In Louisiana, those convicted of simple escape face additional years added to their sentences, compounding the legal consequences for the group.
