Tony Romo Admits Intentional ‘Wife’ Comment on Taylor Swift During Chiefs Game

Tony Romo has revealed that his 2023 on-air slip-up, referring to Taylor Swift as Travis Kelce’s wife during a Kansas City Chiefs broadcast, was no accident. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback made the comment just months after the Grammy-winning artist and NFL tight end went public with their romance.

While commentating on the game, Romo stated, ‘As you see Kelce’s wife, Taylor Swift in the audience. Err, I’m sorry, girlfriend.’ His broadcast partner, Jim Nantz, quickly replied, ‘Not yet.’

Romo’s Confession on SiriusXM

During a recent segment on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, Romo confessed that he intentionally toyed with viewers. ‘I did, kind of, play with the fans. I think I was like, “And there’s…” I think I said, “his wife,”’ he explained. ‘I did that on purpose and people were like, “Do you know something?” I was like, “Nah, I just wanted to make you guys think for a second [and] just mess with you a little bit.”’

Fan Reactions to the Viral Moment

The remark sparked immediate excitement among fans. One viewer posted on X, ‘NO WAY THE REPORTER JUST ACCIDENTALLY SAID KELCE’S WIFE AHHHH,’ sharing a photo of Swift cheering. Another fan noted, ‘I laughed right out loud. Kinda liked the sound of that, actually.’ A social media exchange captured the buzz, with one message reading, ‘Commentator called Taylor Travis’s wife,’ prompting a reply suggesting, ‘They need to play Lavender Haze at half time.’

The Engagement Announcement

Romo’s playful prediction proved prescient when Swift and Kelce announced their engagement in August 2025. The couple shared Instagram photos of Kelce proposing on one knee beneath a rose arch in a garden setting. Their caption read, ‘Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.’

A close-up image highlighted the engagement ring: a round brilliant-cut old mine diamond bezel-set in yellow gold, designed by Kelce in collaboration with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry. The post quickly amassed over 1.5 million likes in 10 minutes and surpassed 10 million within an hour.

Insights into Their Relationship

While wedding plans remain private, Kelce recently discussed their dynamic on his New Heights podcast. Speaking with guest George Clooney last month, he shared, ‘Well, it’s only been two and a half years, and you’re right. I haven’t gotten into an argument. Never once.’
